Security by design

Security by design is the take-up of security issues at the conception stage of new products/systems in order to reduce vulnerabilities. This includes strengthening complementarity and cooperation between civil and defence technologies. Security by design requires comprehensive risk assessment to identify threats posed to systems, and then plan security into every stage.

According to the ESRIF Final Report, "securing the future will require that security be treated as integral part of any given system, process or operation from the point of conceptualisation onward. Current add-on security solutions no longer suffice, Europe needs a systemic approach to security."

The approach borrows from precedent concepts such as "secured by design", an approach to crime prevention by "designing out" crime, or "secure by design", an approach from software engineering.
